Prof. Will Alsop RA OBE
Prof. Will Alsop RA OBE is one of the most prominent architects working in Britain or indeed the world today. Consistently profiled alongside luminaries such as Lord Foster and Lord Rogers, he is the subject of a great deal of national press coverage for such projects as Peckham Library, the Barnsley 'Tuscan' masterplan, and North Greenwich Underground Station. His international career began when he won the international competition to design the Hotel du Department des Bouches du Rhône, Marseilles. Colloquially known as Le Grand Bleu, the finished building astonished the architectural world with its bold forms executed in deep blue cladding. Often outspoken on many issues, he was the subject of national attention as the winner of the 'Fourth Grace' competition for Liverpool's waterfront in December 2002. He is also the Professor for Architecture at the Vienna Technical University, as well as lecturing at academic institutions worldwide. Will Alsop follows a parallel path as an artist, feeling that it is a discipline inseparable from architecture. He was tutor of sculpture at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, London, for several years, has held many other academic posts, and actively promotes the artistic contribution to built environments. His paintings and sketches have been exhibited alongside his architectural projects in dedicated exhibitions at Sir John Soane's Museum, Milton Keynes Gallery, Cube Gallery Manchester, the British Pavilion at Venice Biennial and many others.
